How To Actually Create A Better 2024 (Avoid This Mistake)
Heart & Hustle - 10X Your Relationships & Business
New Year's Resolutions suck.
The data shows 50% of people quit after a month and 81% in the long run.
It's a shame because the new year can be a massive turning point. You stuff yourself with delicious food, party your butt off, and watch your drunk neighbor Joe fire a stray rocket through his bedroom window and set his house on fire. It's a blast.
Wouldn't it be great if you could use that energy to create massive change in your life as well?
(This is a rhetorical question.)
I've tried tons of approaches, but one has stuck with me for years - and I'll continue doing it for the foreseeable future for two reasons.
No. 1: It's incredibly simple.
No. 2: It works like a charm.
Like so many other great things, it makes use of the Pareto Principle, which states that 80% of results come from 20% of efforts.
So here's what I do every year (and you can, too):
Reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the last year (the GBU)
I write down every major event, person who influenced me, changes I've made, lessons I learnt, and things I spent my time with.
Create two lists
The first one contains the 20% of GBU that made me most happy - and the second one contains the 20% that made me most unhappy.
Commit to doing more of the former and less of the latter
I book retreats, festivals, and workshops in advance. I reduce or cut contact with people who aren't good for my soul and growth. Also, I put up the two lists I made so they remind me every day what I want to focus on and what I want to let go of.
That's it. That's the whole thing.
You can't control what the new year will be like - but you can do your best to be a little happier than in the last one.
Me enjoying the last sunshine of 2023.
Secret Sauce - This week's quote:
“What the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year.” – Vern McLellan
Lots of people ask for things from life.
Health. Money. Love. Growth. A new neighbor who doesn't use a hammer drill every weekend and doesn't set his house on fire on the 31st.
And that's cool. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. But just asking puts you at the mercy of forces outside of your control.
Instead, focus on what you can do. What do you commit to because it's good for you? What do you cut out because it doesn't serve you?
20% is all it takes.
🙏
Happy new year!
